Ben Harper is back with a great new album : Call it what it is. I really like this new album, 11 songs with many different vibes and the song that we are talking about today : Call it what it is, a song about the murder of young blacks by the police in the USA.

the album

The album starts with the song: when sex was dirty. A great rock song solid with the kind of chorus that stays in your head. Then Deeper and deeper, a beautiful ‘acoustic’ song about the pain you feel when your lover is not loving you anymore. The 3rd song is Call it what it is , a very blues rock piece and we will talk longer about this one in this post. How dark is gone have some Spanish vibes in it. Shine starts with an organ and gets this Motown color that fit very well to this song a feel good song “If you were all I had, I would have it all”. All That Has Grown sounds like a typical Ben Harper song in a good way, beautiful acoustic slide guitar and this voice that touches your soul and beautiful lyrics: “Our choices and our words,Like that bird have flown,After the storm,Look at all that has grown”. Pink balloon is a sounding more like the 1st track of the album, solid rock, very efficient. Then it’s Finding our way, it’s clearly a reggae song not much to say about it. It is in Bones that Ben Harper is having his best vocal performance, such a great interpretation full of soul. Dance Like Fire is a great acoustic song “The real revolutionary, Won’t hide in his home. The real prophet, Dies poor and alone”. The last song of the album : Goodbye to you is a ballad, a breakup song “After all we’ve been through, I don’t know how to say goodbye to you”. Overall a great LP very well produced.

Lyrics

“Call It What It Is”

They shot him in the back
Now it’s a crime to be black
So don’t act surprised
When it gets  it what it is
Call it what it is
Call it
what it is
MurderThere’s good cops
Bad cops
White cops
Black copsCall it what it is
Call it what it is
Call it
what it is
MurderTrevon Martin
Ezel Ford
Michael Brown
And so many many moreBut call it what it is
Call it what it is
Call it
what it is
Murder

Government, ain’t easy
policing, ain’t easy
hard times, ain’t easy
Oppression, ain’t easy
racism, ain’t easy
fear, ain’t easy
suffering, ain’t easy

But call it what it is
Call it what it is
Call it
what it is
Murder

Gun control
Mind control
Self-control
We’ve dug ourselves a hole

But call it what it is
Call it what it is
Call it
what it is
Murder

Call it what it is
Call it what it is
Call it
what it is
Murder

Call it what it is
Call it what it is
Call it
what it is

Decoding the message – my 2 cents

Let’s start with a very powerful video that sums up the feelings of the black community and explain why the movement black lives matter was created.

#blacklivesmatter. The black community debates about the Legacy of racism in the USA, but… is it a legacy? Or is it still almost the same?

The Fergusson protest, the reaction to yet another killing by the police of a young black American.

So the question we can ask ourselves is: Are all cops bad? and the answer is ….(spoiler alert) yes.

Arguments about why the police forces are not your friends. Fuck the police!

The police state, repression of protest. Here it is all about the big picture.

So what do you think after seeing all that? I do know that some people (Stefan Molyneux, etc.) have other views and theories about Michael brown, Trevon Martin or Ezell Ford murders. But how can you justify that any man who is unarmed can be killed by a cop? (and Stefan Molyneux is making his point here) But How can you justify anyone’s murder anyway? Also, how can you deny the obvious discrimination against blacks and latinos in the USA?

I hope you are enjoying that great song and those interesting videos, please like / share and spread the love.

Peace.
